Aria di crisi per tutti...
La One Laptop Per Child dimezza il suo staff e taglia i fondi allo sviluppo di Sugar, la simpatica interfaccia ideata per presentare le varie attività che è possibile svolgere su questi PC portatili sotto costo. Il progetto OLPC non è mai del tutto decollato e non è stato esente da critiche, però dispiace saperli in difficoltà.

Ho spesso lamentato la lentezza di Yum, ma finché lo faccio io è un conto (in fondo sono un cattiiivo utente Ubuntu!) invece se a muovere le critiche è un esperto di Fedora immagino che tutti siano d'accordo quantomeno a mettersi in discussione.
Certo che però ci rimango male se i "sei modi per velocizzare Yum" si limitano a banalità tipo non usare la GUI, scegliere un mirror più veloce, saltare pacchetti e... udite udite, usare APT4RPM p Smart ._. Bocciato.

Ho sempre sostenuto che avere un Desktop separato dalla Home sia una stupida duplicazione. Moltissimi sono oramai abituati allo stile un po' "Windows" di avere un Desktop come entità sostitutiva della propria Home. L'articolo che linko è un semplice saluto di fine/inizio anno che parla di commit digest di KDE (a proposito, vi consiglio di seguirli) che non contengono mai niente di nuovo a parte la solita valanga di novità :D
Oltre ai cambiamenti nell'svn di KDE una cosa mi ha lasciato di stucco: in una settimana hanno contribuito DUECENTOSETTANTASETTE sviluppatori! E la media normale si aggira sempre attorno a 250... Sono numeri incredibili.

Alan Cox è sempre stato uno dei fiori all'occhiello di Red Hat, adesso invece annuncia di essere stato assunto direttamente da Intel, ossia una delle aziende più attive e benefiche per il pinguino.
Dal mio piccolo cantuccio di web faccio i complimenti all'uomo e alla nuova azienda che se lo è aggiugicato, senza ovviamente dimenticare una menzione a Red Hat, che a suo dire conta comunque con un preparato "kernel team". Grandi cose.

Rilasciata una versione molto attesa del kernel Linux
Tra le tante novità ce ne sono alcune succulente anche per chi non ha estrema familiarità con lo sviluppo del kernel, mi riferisco a GEM GPU memory manager che potrebbe essere l'inizio di una nuova era per la gestione delle schede video, alle novità per la gestione della memoria e soprattutto all'anticipata introduzione del filesystem EXT4 non più considerato sperimentale, ma c'è molto altro (seguite il link!).
Il buon vecchio Linus è forse uno dei pochi project-leaders che non tradisce mai aspettative :)

It has been a very interesting last month and a half and it is very gratifying having something that is already usable :-) I hope that now vtorri (from #edevelop on freenode) will be very happy as he have encouraged me to do the port for I think about half a year.

Non so: gioite, se vi va. A me la possibilità di coniugare WebKit e la flessibilità delle EFL sembra un fatto potenzialmente degno di nota, anche se Enlightenment è purtroppo in lenta agonia da anni.

Google Chrome, il broswer di Google, esce dallo stato di beta e viene rilasciato, ma non per Linux.
Strano vedere un software Google che esca dalla eterna condizione di "Beta" tipica delle applicazioni Google (più o meno web-based). Non tanto strano - purtroppo - vedere che non si abbia ancora notizia di una versione nativa per Linux.

La prossima versione di Ubuntu includerà i driver Nouveau, come già fatto da Fedora. Non abilitati automaticamente.
Nouveau è l'alternativa libera e aperta ai driver per schede Nvidia. Purtroppo un'alternativa di cui non si legge più alcuna notizia da troppo tempo... chissà se riusciranno mai a competere con i driver proprietari?
