Non sarà certo la soluzione definitiva ai tanti problemi di Openmoko, ma l'aiuto dell'Università brasiliana, insieme all'interessamento del Ministero per le Telecomunicazioni, contribuisce a scongiurare la fine del progetto.
Il Presidente Lula è stato di recente[1] protagonista di dichiarazioni esplicitamente favorevoli all'uso di software libero in Brasile, come mezzo per liberarsi dalla subordinazione tecnologica da Microsoft (leggi: USA).
Che le due cose siano collegate?

Jon 'maddog' Hall has gotten the University of São Paulo interested in supporting the ongoing development of the Openmoko phone platform. Among other things, the university has a fancy surface-mount prototyping facility and a fair amount of telecommunications experience to offer. "Dr. Zuffo has discussed the Openmoko project with the Minister of Telecommunications of Brazil, and the Minister is very enthusiastic about the concept. Having the support of the government of the twelfth largest economy behind the project might really help us with various negotiations with vendors."
