Incredibile: una nuova Debian ogni due anni?!

Clamorosa decisione dal progetto Debian, che giunge dopo anni di incertezza sulla possibilità di rilasci a scadenza fissa. A partire da Etch e Lenny, lo sviluppo di Debian verrà organizzato in cicli di “freeze” biennali.
A Dicembre di ogni due anni ci sarà il termine per introdurre novità e passare alla fase di “ripulitura” per il rilascio, che dovrebbe così avvenire entro la primavera di ogni due anni.
Termini non strettamente fissati dunque, ma questa piccola rivoluzione prepara la strada per un modello di sviluppo totalmente inedito per Debian.
Due anni mi sembra un tempo ragionevole. Io approvo in pieno!
The Debian project has sent out a surprise notice that it has decided to
move to a time-based release (or, at least, “release freeze”) model. “Freezes
will from now on happen in the December of every odd year, which means
that releases will from now on happen sometime in the first half of every
even year. To that effect the next freeze will happen in December 2009,
with a release expected in spring 2010. The project chose December as a
suitable freeze date since spring releases proved successful for the
releases of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codenamed ‘Etch’) and Debian GNU/Linux
5.0 (’Lenny’).” Evidently this decision was made at DebConf, but
quite a few in the Debian community still appear to be surprised by the
announcement.

Superato il fatidico numero 1.000.000.000 di scaricamenti di Firefox. Cosa comporta ciò? Assolutamente nulla, ma fa sempre comodo una scusa in più per brindare :)

KDE come desktop predefinito per OpenSUSE?

Da sempre SuSE->OpenSUSE è la distribuzione di riferimento per utenti e sviluppatori KDE, nonostante sia insidiata da Kubuntu che cerca di scrollarsi la fama di "sorellastra di Ubuntu" e nonostante Novell SLED (la versione "seria" di OpenSUSE) sia basata su GNOME e non su KDE.Insomma, l’utenza di OpenSUSE preferisce KDE a GNOME (~70% contro ~30%) e allo stesso modo utenti e sviluppatori KDE preferiscono in larga parte OpenSUSE… Perché allora non andare fino in fondo e rendere nuovamente KDE il desktop predefinito della distribuzione?
Nel monotono panorama di distro GNOME, secondo me sarebbe una mossa azzeccata.

Adesso che Microsoft è stata costretta dalla UE a permettere la scelta del browser (non più solo IE) in fase di installazione, Opera se ne sono usciti con l’idiozia che pure Ubuntu e Apple dovrebbero fare lo stesso.Di Apple non mi frega una mazza sottaceto, ma l’ipotesi prevista da Opera per Ubuntu è una idiozia grossolana. Opera: rilasciate i sorgenti, fate un browser che non abbia un’attrattiva prossima allo zero e poi ne parliamo.
Forse non avreste nemmeno bisogno di queste farneticazioni.
Last week, the European Commission announced that Microsoft is willing to implement a browser ballot screen in Windows so that users can select a browser to install when installing Windows or when setting up their OEM computer. While this makes Opera very happy, Opera would like to see Ubuntu and Apple offer such a ballot screen too.

Con la prossima versione di Firefox ci saranno alcune novità. Non ho mai apprezzato LiVES: è un editor video con un’interfaccia legnosa e funzionalità di VJ a cui non sono interessato.In ogni caso so che in molti lo apprezzano, dunque ho piacere a segnalare la versione 1.0 tonda, che “è solo un numero e non vuol dire niente”, ma rende l’idea che il team sia contento dei risultati raggiunti.
