Adobe ha paura di HTML5? Se è così reagisce bene (non benissimo, ma bene) e rilascia questo Open Source Media Framework che dovrebbe invogliare sviluppatori a non abbandonare Flash in favore di tag video (tra l’altro non ancora standardizzati a dovere).Adobe fa sul serio con il suo impegno nel codice aperto? Lo vedremo, ma al momento sembra solo un continuo tastare il terreno. In attesa di avere Air, Shockwave e altro, OSMF dovrebbe andare a beneficio di openvideoplayer.com
Adobe has released an Open Source Media Framework (OSMF) that can be used to build Flash-based streaming video players. The framework emerged from Adobe’s Strobe initiative and is part of a broader collaborative effort called the Open Video Player project that has brought together Microsoft, Adobe, Akamai, and other key players with the aim of simplifying real-world video delivery on the Internet.
Red Hat tra le prime 500 aziende al NASDAQ

Red Hat è stata inclusa da Standard & Poors nella top 500 delle aziende quotate al NASDAQ.Concordo con l’analisi e insieme ai tantissimi altri segnali considero questo avvenitmento, storico per l’azienda, uno dei tanti segnali che Linux non è più una nicchia.

While there is little doubt that IPO was a big event for Red Hat and Linux, perhaps an even more important one from a milestone point of view will officially occur this Friday. Terza tornata per Ubuntu Hundred Paper Cuts[1], continua il perfezionamento di tanti piccoli dettagli che, dieci alla volta, stanno portando una silenziosa rivoluzione in Ubuntu (e da qui si spera un po’ a tutto l’ecosistema).Tra i paper cuts meglio riusciti non mancano già superstar, come la ri-sistemazione (ancora in corso) delle barre degli strumenti di Nautilus[2]

The third milestone in the One Hundred Paper Cuts project:
- Default folders in user’s home directory (e.g. Music, Photos) should have special icons
- Dim files in Nautilus that have been cut for later pasting
- Ubuntu’s LiveCD “Install” desktop icon is confusing
- Turn scrolling on window list to switch windows off by default
- Date & time applet should have tooltips on (ellipsised) calendar events
- Emblems get cut off when Nautilus zoomed to 150%
- System beep is overused and way too loud
- Timezone picker map during install is unnecessarily small
- “System > About Ubuntu” should display Ubuntu’s version number more prominently
- File type labels can make file chooser dialog wider than your screen
- KDE menu button should have a Kubuntu logo
If you can help close any of these, please do! Cleaning up patches and notifying upstreams (patiently and kindly) that reviews are needed is a great way to help. Otherwise, you can take a look at this week’s milestone.
Launchpad è open source

Launchpad è un portale collaborativo orientato alla gestione di progetti software, team, traduzioni, repository e altro, usato principalmente da Ubuntu, ma anche da altri progetti. Adesso è finalmente open source.La decisione era già stata anticipata molto tempo fa da Canonical, che ha finalmente dato un seguito alle parole. Non prevedo manifestazioni di pubblico giubilo nelle piazze di tutto il mondo, ma è pur sempre una buona notizia.
Canonical has announced the long-awaited release of the Launchpad source. “Projects that are hosted on Launchpad are immediately connected to every other project hosted there in a way that makes it easy to collaborate on code, translations, bug fixes and feature design across project boundaries. Rather than hosting individual projects, we host a massive and connected community that collaborates together across many projects. Making Launchpad itself open source gives users the ability to improve the service they use every day.” More information can be found on the development wiki.

Mesa 7.5 è stato finalmente rilasciato dopo mesi di sviluppo e include Gallium3D, una nuova architettura per sviluppare driver 3D.Buone notizie, soprattutto per chi possiede una scheda video Intel, ma ci sarà ancora da lavorare per stabilizzare ed estendere le migliorie alla maggior parte degli utenti[1].

FSF: Microsoft, la Community Promise non basta.

Avevo detto[1] che avrei aspettato una posizione ufficiale di FSF sulla questione Microsoft, Mono e Community Promise.Beh è arrivata ed è un “No, la CP non va bene”, ma FSF per la prima volta suggerisce a Microsoft cosa fare se vuole davvero risolvere la questione.
Io “sospetto” che Microsoft non abbia alcun interesse a risolverla, la questione. Anzi[2].

The Free Software Foundation has issued another statement on Mono, C# after the recent Microsoft extension of the terms of their Community Promise to implementations of ECMA 334 and 335. FSF says that the “promise is full of loopholes, and it’s nowhere near enough to make C# safe.” The article also offers to help Microsoft get it right, if it is sincere in wishing to really reassure FOSS users it doesn’t intend to sue them for using Mono.
Google Chrome OS aiuterà Linux sul Desktop?

C’è ancora chi continua a chiedersi se Google Chrome OS rappresenterà una vittoria per Linux-sul-Desktop oppure no… ma secondo me la domanda è malposta (cit), soprattutto perché al momento non si sa cosa costituirà Chrome OS, sappiamo solo del kernel Linux e di un server X alternativo.Il mio punto di vista[1] è semplice: grazie ai grandi produttori che si sono subito schierati a favore, Chrome OS aiuterà di sicuro a sostenere la tendenza positiva a fornire supporto hardware a Linux, mentre per tutto il resto è totalmente inutile e prematuro pronunciarsi.
