La motivazione ufficiale non ne fa menzione ma secondo ComuterWorld la causa scatenante sarebbe stata il blocco di un intero giorno lavorativo, causata qualche mese fa da Windows.Non si evince ancora se al suo posto verrà adottato Linux, ma è un colpo alle campagne pubblicitarie che Microsoft basava sul fatto di avere LSE tra i clienti.
Anyone who was ever fool enough to believe that Microsoft software was good enough to be used for a mission-critical operation had their face slapped this September when the LSE (London Stock Exchange)’s Windows-based TradElect system brought the market to a standstill for almost an entire day. While the LSE denied that the collapse was TradElect’s fault, they also refused to explain what the problem really was. Sources at the LSE tell me to this day that the problem was with TradElect.
Totem e GNOME DVB, guardare e registrare programmi TV

GNOME DVB è scritto in Vala come parte di un progetto sponsorizzato dal Google Summer of Code. Permetterà a Totem di guardare e registrare programmi TV sfruttando apposite periferiche. Credo sia il primo progetto Vala che attira la mia attenzione.*Vala* è un linguaggio con sintassi simile al C#, che continua ad attirare la curiosità di molti sviluppatori GNOME… vedremo dove ci porterà.

Ventata di novità per Tracker

Tracker è un progetto che seguo ormai da anni (da quando è nato). Una riscrittura lo ha portato – tra le altre cose – a supportare Nepomuk e SPARQL. Vai Tracker!
Tracker master:
- Uses SPARQL as query language
- Uses Nepomuk for its base ontologies
- Supports SPARQL Update
- Supports aggregates COUNT, AVG, SUM, MIN and MAX in SPARQL
- Operates for all its storage functionality as a separate binary
- Operates for all its indexing, crawling and monitoring functionalities as a separately packagable binary
Continua il lavoro sul Nepomuk-KDE

Quella che vedete è solo una bozza di Adam Kidder di come potrebbero apparire i controlli per integrare la ricerca Nepomuk in Dolphin (che purtroppo è ancora in alto mare, come il resto di Nepomuk-KDE).Dal punto di vista di backend invece, ossia quello che non si vede, Adam riporta che il suo GSoC procede e dettaglia quel che ha ottenuto finora.
In tempi non sospetti io avevo ipotizzato che il primo KDE 4 “pronto per me” sarebbe stato il 4.4, e per pronto intendevo anche con Nepomuk funzionante. Vedremo…

Mono, C#… e se il problema fossero le GTK+?

Dario Freddi (KDE) ha scritto un lungo articolo sulla questione Mono sì/Mono no/Parliamone.Il suo punto di vista è… “originale”: il problema starebbe nella carenza di sviluppatori dotati e nella difficoltà di scrivere app usando solo GTK+/C/C++ (e per questo loda l’autore di GNote).
Ovviamente Dario conosce e usa le Qt, dunque il suo messaggio implicito non è proprio nascosto, ma riesce a non scadere mella polemica sterile.
Consider the amount of programs recently written in GTK. A huge percentage of them is in Python or Mono. But some skilled GNOME developers already showed the world (*cough*GNote*cough*) how Mono is NOT saving time to someone who is skilled and knows how to do things the right way. My solution to the debate is not boycotting, insulting or anything: is having easier, crossplatform toolkits, and more skilled developers.

Firefox 3.5 è il doppio più veloce di Firefox 3 in resa delle pagine, e si posiziona terzo assoluto dopo Safari e l’inarrivabile Chrome.Nei miei test assolutamete empirici si sta confermando all’altezza della situazione, specie in confronto a Firefox 3. Chrome/Chromium è davvero più veloce anche nella mia box, ma ovviamente non è paragonabile alle funzionalità di Firefox.

Questo di Adriaan de Groot è il terzo articolo di fila che leggo su Planet KDE riguardo a Mono (trovate i link agli altri due nelle prime righe dell’originale riportato).La discussione si snoda come sempre tra contrari e favorevoli, tra assunti fallaci e assunti più fallaci, tra gente che ha torto e tra gente che ha più torto. Senza venirne a capo.
There have been two posts about C# and mono on PlanetKDE this week (e.g. Richard and Andreas). The comments on Andreas’ entry are quite cogent, as are those replying to Richard, but it deserves a wider audience. As far as asking RMS at Gran Canaria this weekend, it’s worth a shot if you abstract the question away from specifically-C# and specifically-mono.
